The 5 Employees Every Vet Clinic Has
You know them. You love them. You’ve absolutely hidden in the treatment area to avoid one of them.
Vet med is a beautiful mix of personalities held together by caffeine, teamwork, and increasingly concerning coping mechanisms.
No matter where you work – small GP, specialty, ER, mixed animal, corporate, privately owned – every clinic somehow ends up with the same coworker archetypes.
Every. Single. Time.
Let’s meet them.
The Emotional Support Technician
This tech is the backbone of the clinic and everyone knows it.
They:
- Know where everything is
- Can place a catheter in the middle of a tornado
- Somehow remain calm during absolute chaos
- Have unofficially adopted every new employee
People say things like:
“Can you just ask Sarah?”
Because Sarah knows.
Sarah always knows.
This tech has:
- Snacks in their locker
- Backup pens
- The emotional burden of the entire building
They are one mildly inconvenient shift away from disappearing into the woods permanently.
The Chaos Gremlin CSR
This CSR thrives in disorder.
The phones are ringing.
The schedule is collapsing.
A client is upset.
And somehow this person is:
- Eating chips
- Laughing
- And casually saying: “It’s fineeeee!”
They can:
- Answer three phone lines simultaneously
- Remember every client’s pet name
- Accidentally start drama without meaning to
You never know what they’re going to say at the front desk, and frankly, that’s part of the thrill.
The “I Can Hold” Assistant
This assistant has zero fear and questionable self-preservation instincts.
Every difficult patient is met with:
“I can hold!”
Should they be trying to restrain an angry shepherd alone?
Absolutely not.
Will they do it anyway?
Without hesitation.
This person:
- Has mystery bruises
- Climbs on things they shouldn’t
- Somehow survives situations that should legally count as extreme sports
The Veterinarian Running Entirely on Caffeine and Vibes
This doctor:
- Hasn’t sat down since 8:12am
- Has consumed enough caffeine to see through time
- Is surviving purely through clinical knowledge and momentum
They disappear into an exam room for concerning amounts of time and emerge saying things like:
“Well THAT was weird!”
Their handwriting looks historical.
Their lunch is untouched.
Their emotional stability depends entirely on whether the lab machine cooperates today.
The Practice Manager One Mild Inconvenience Away From Losing It
You can always tell what kind of day the PM is having by the speed of their walk.
They spend their day:
- Solving staffing issues
- Answering questions
- Dealing with upset clients
- Fixing scheduling problems
- Attending meetings
- Hearing: “Can I ask you something real quick?”…at least 94 times a day
At any given moment, they are balancing:
- Patient care
- Clinic performance
- Staff morale
- And a slowly deteriorating nervous system
Yet somehow, they continue forward armed only with determination and coffee.
BONUS: The Clinic Cat
Not technically employed.
Still runs the place.
Final Thoughts
Vet clinics are stressful, chaotic, emotional places.
But somehow, the personalities inside them make the hard days survivable.
The emotional support techs.
The chaos gremlin CSRs.
The caffeine-powered doctors.
The fearless assistants.
The overstimulated PMs.
Every clinic has them.
And honestly?
Vet med wouldn’t be nearly as fun without them.
