International Cat Day: Honoring Our Tiny, Purring, Occasionally Murderous Overlords
August 8 is International Cat Day, and if you work in vet med, you already know: Cats aren’t just pets.
They’re puzzles. Personalities. Pint-sized panthers with very specific rules.
Some love you.
Some tolerate you.
Some would happily set you on fire if their paw touches a towel wrong.
And we love them all.
Let’s Hear it for the Cat Whisperers
Because it takes a special kind of magic (and maybe a little luck) to:
- Give meds to a cat without losing a finger
- Nail a jugular blood draw on a cat wrapped like a burrito
- Tell the difference between “I’m purring because I’m happy” and “I’m purring because I’m about to kill you”
Whether you’re a tech with a sixth sense for feline energy shifts or a DVM who can explain kidney disease without getting side-eyed, you are the unsung heroes of feline care.
Cats Are NOT Small Dogs (But Clients Often Think They Are)
They’re unique. They’re sensitive. They’re often…very, very dramatic.
They deserve vet teams who understand their quirks – from silent suffering to crate-phobia to pretending to be fine until they’re definitely not.
So on this International Cat Day, let’s remind the world:
- Cat care takes skill, patience, and gentler restraint than a hostage negotiation.
- Cat owners need education, not just estimates.
- Feline-friendly handling isn’t a bonus – it’s essential.
A Few Things We’ve Learned From Cats Over the Years:
- If you ignore someone long enough, they will eventually feed you.
- Sometimes the best response to stress is to hide under a blanket and refuse to come out.
- Just because someone’s quiet doesn’t mean they’re not judging you.
- And yes…knocking things off shelves is a valid form of communication.
Final Purr-spective:
To all the vet med professionals who brave the hissy fits, master the art of stealthy exams, and celebrate every normal litterbox update like it’s a Nobel Prize:
Thank you. You make life better for our feline friends and the people who love them.
